What Are Biophotons?
Modern science has discovered that living cells emit ultra-weak bursts of light — known as biophotons. These emissions are not just random flickers; they appear to carry information and may play a role in cell-to-cell communication, DNA regulation, and the coherence of living systems.
Unlike ordinary light, biophotons are so subtle they require highly sensitive equipment to detect. Yet they are real — quiet whispers of energy that seem to pulse from the very fabric of life.
Scientists have found that healthier, more coherent systems emit more organized and stronger biophoton emissions. Meditation, emotional regulation, and conscious intention have even been shown to increase or harmonize this subtle light.
The Kabbalistic View: Everything Is Light
In Kabbalistic mysticism, the entire universe originates from the Or Ein Sof the Infinite Light of the Divine. Before creation, only this light existed. All forms, beings, and spiritual realms emerged as filtered expressions of this original radiance. The Kabbalists understood that the soul illuminated the material body as the light illuminates an object is shines on because the body is a 'garment' of the soul.
Thus, the human soul, is a literal fragment of divine light. Our task in life is to reveal, refine, and elevate this light within ourselves and in the world around us. This mirrors the scientific observation of biophotons: each of us emits light, even physically, and that light reflects our inner harmony or dissonance. Kabalistically the body is like a window through which the soul shines. This is further understood by the relationship between the three lowel level of the soul and their placement in the human body. The Nefesh lives in the liver and is often understood to expand to all of the lower organs. The Ruach lives in the heart. The Neshamah lives in the brain. The two higher levels of the soul live outside of the body. The Chaya is described to be what we would call the aura of a person, living just outside the body. The Yechidah can best be understood as an umbilical cord of light that is connected each person to the creator (ein sof).
Light as Communication
Kabbalah often describes creation as a dynamic flow of energy and information Divine Shefa from higher to lower worlds, encoded in light and expressed through the sefirot (divine emanations). This divine light "speaks" creation into being. The souls five levels, Nefesh, Ruach, Neshamah, Chaya and Yechidah correspond to distinct degrees of internalizing and manifesting this divine flow.
Likewise, biophotons are not just pretty phenomena they carry information. Some researchers suggest that our DNA acts like a biophoton laser, emitting coherent light for intracellular and even intercellular communication.
In this way, biophotons are the scientific echo of Kabbalah’s spiritual truths. Both traditions agree: Light is not just illumination it is communication, intelligence, and essence.
In summary: the higher soul levels correspond to increasing spiritual illumination and consciousness, which could correlate with greater consistency and intensity of biophotons emissions, reflecting inner spiritual health. This is backed by a passage from the Zohar translated in English (The Zhar:Pritzker Edition, Vol.1 12:3) "The enlightened will shine like the zohar, radiance, of the sky and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever. This passage is descriving how the soul of the righteous radiate spiritual light, compared to the brightness of the heavens.
Ergo, we can also condlufe that blockaged or disturbances in this spiritual light, as kabbalah teaches, could manifest physically as diminished biophoton emossion, indicating stress or imblance.
Healing and Coherence
In both science and mysticism, light becomes a barometer of well-being.
In Kabbalah, spiritual disconnection or imbalance dims our inner light.
In biophoton research, stress, disease, or emotional trauma disrupt light emission.
Practices that align the soul — such as prayer, mitzvot (sacred actions), meditation, or even song — are said to restore divine light to the soul and world.
Similarly, meditative and mindful states have been shown to increase biophoton coherence and emission.
This alignment between spiritual purity and literal light is more than metaphor suggests a deep integration between consciousness and biology.
Living as a Luminous Being
To live in alignment with the light is to see ourselves as vessels of divine radiance. Kabbalah teaches that our mission is Tikkun Ha’Olam the repair of the world — which happens by refining our ego, embodying love and justice, and revealing light in places of darkness. We see how science now confirms: we do radiate light subtly, constantly, beautifully. This is the reality that we literally and spiritually glow.
Final Thought
What if your presence your thoughts, your love, your prayers didn’t just feel powerful, but actually shone? What if every mitzvah, every kind word, every sacred moment increased the light inside you and around you?
“The enlightened will shine like the זהר (zohar), radiance, of the sky, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever (Daniel 12:3).”— The Zohar: Pritzker Edition, Vol. 1
This passage draws on Daniel and is referenced by the Zohar to describe how the souls of the righteous radiate spiritual light, compared to the brightness of the heavens.
